The rain again and again. Already obliged to perform in the rain ten days ago in Lausanne, Usain Bolt once again had to contend with cold, damp conditions at the Stade de France. And yet these same difficult conditions didn’t prevent him from racking up an excellent time (9’’79), the best of the season over 100 metres.
Mahiedine Mekhissi Benabbad didn’t let the nerves get to him in front of the home crowd at the Stade de France. The Frenchman, silver medallist at the Olympic Games, won the 3,000 metre Steeplechase at the Meeting Areva in 8’13’’23. He beat the Kenyan Ezekiel Kemboi (8’15’’27) and the Finnish athlete Jukka Keskisalo (8’15’’29).
Anna Willard pulled off a double in the 800 metres at the Meeting Areva. The American beat her personal best in 1’58’’80 and dominated over Italian Elisa Cusma Piccione (1’58’’99). The French athlete Elodie Guegan also set a new personal best by taking fifth place with a time of 1’59’’57.
Andreas Thorkildsen got the better of his rival Tero Pitkämäki during the javelin throwing at the Meeting Areva. The Norwegian succeeded in a throw of 88m03 on his fourth attempt, whilst the Finnish athlete had to make do with 86m68 on his first attempt.
Phillips Idowu won the triple jump competition at the Meeting Areva. The British athlete dominated thanks to a jump of 17m17 on his fourth attempt. Brazilian Jadel Gregorio ranked second (17m12), ahead of Cubans David Giralt (17m07) and Alexis Copello (17m00). French triple jumper Teddy Tamgho took fifth with a jump of 16m97, but didn’t manage to achieve the minimum distance for the Worlds in Berlin.
Elena Isinbaeva is still on track for the million dollars offered by the Golden League. The Russian, who braved the rain like the other competitors, cleared a jump of 4m65 on her first attempt and indeed she decided to make do with this jump. Her compatriot Svetlana Feofanova took second place in the competition with 4m55. The Polish athlete Anna Rogowska finished third, she too with 4m55.
